چکیده

Introduction. Characterization of useable planetary materials will require high sampling throughput. Although remote observations from orbiting spacecraft provide spatially wide coverage, they do not, by themselves, provide sufficient information for materials utilization purposes. On the other hand, active rover-based in-situ analyses can provide detailed geological information but can be very time-consuming and limited in scope, as was recently demonstrated by the Mars Pathfinder Mission. The optimum configuration for detailed analysis with wide spatial coverage may be a standoff technique.

The effect of self-absorption correction using internal reference on determining heavy metals concentration by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

The identification and concentration of heavy metals, which may be so harmful for the body, is determined by the method of calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using a special strategy. First, the plasma temperature is obtained using the Boltzmann plot. Then, a line with an inappreciable self-absorption is considered for each element as the reference. The modified intensities o...

Stand-off detection of organic samples using filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy

As an alternative to focusing nanosecond pulses for stand-off LIBS detection of energetic materials, we use self-channeled femtosecond pulses from a Ti:Sapphire laser to produce filaments at 12 meters and create a plasma on copper, graphite and polyisobutylene film. We show the possibilities of this Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy configuration for thin organic sample detection on a surfac...

Optical Opacity of Laser Induced Plasma in Distilled Water with NaCl and TiO2 Nanoparticles Impurities

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of laser induced optical breakdown in impure water was studied by using a pump- probe technique. The plasma was induced by a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser pulse (with pulse duration ~10 ns) in distilled water with two types of impurities: (I) a solution (highly diluted salt water as a conductor) and (II) a colloidal (TiO2 in colloidal nanoparticle form as a dielectric...

Size Distribution Measurement of Candle\'s Soot Nanoparticles by Using Time Resolved Laser Induced Incandescence

Time resolved laser induced incandescence (LII) technique is used to measure size distribution of soot nanoparticles of candle's flame. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to heat nanoparticles to incandescence temperature and the resulting signal is measured. Mass and energy balance equations are numerically solved to calculate temperature of soot particles in low fluence regime. Assuming Plank black ...

Development and Testing of Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for the Mars Rover Program: Elemental Analyses at Stand-off Distances

Introduction: One of the most fundamental pieces of information about any planetary body is the elemental composition of its surface materials. The Viking Martian landers employed XRF (x-ray fluorescence) and the MER rovers are carrying APXS (alpha-proton x-ray spectrometer) instruments upgraded from that used on the Pathfinder rover to supply elemental composition information for soils and roc...
